Vedas

  Vedas are the eternal knowledge resource of mankind. They are revealed literature, never composed by any person including the supreme God. Hence they are called apaurusheya. There are an infinite number of Vedas. anantA vai vedAh - thus extols a vedic hymn. These vedas are always present in the Supreme God's mind. After creation of the world, the supreme God bestows this vedic knowledge to the four faced Brahma.

Originally, all the vedas belonged to only one group. Supreme God Narayana has divided the whole group into 4 parts constituting 4 vedas

  1. R^ig veda
  2. Yajur veda
  3. sAma veda
  4. atharva veda

Later, when the whole vedas were difficult to be sustained in memory and the entire vedic knowledge went topsy turvy due to the curse of Gautama , bhagavAn vedavyAsa, in dvApara yuga, extracted some Rik mantrAs from the R^ig veda and arranged them to form the R^ig veda. He similarly extracted yajur mantrAs from yajur veda amd sama mantrAs from sAma veda etc and instructed them to his four disciples
