After saluting the lotus-like feet of the husband of Sri Rama Devi and propitiating the lotus feet of our Guru, we will write pramANa chandrikA for the benefit of beginners.

In this world, everyone desires a state called moxa, wherein, he is always happy and never gets tainted with even the slightest of sorrows. As, this state of moXa, is only possible through the knowledge that God is the independent and all others are dependent entities, a person desiring moxa should compulsorily know that this world is dependent on the independent God. The Bhasyakara has said thus -

One who knows this dependent world as always dependent on the independent Hari, shall surely be liberated from the clutches of this saMsAra.

As the true knowledge about these iIndependent and dependent realities can be had from pramANAs, we start this treatise for elucidating the concept of pramANa.

The definition of pramANa etc were elaborately discussed by Sri Jayatirtha in his works like pramANa paddhati etc, but as the presentation there was full of sentences with profound meaning, it cannot be easily grasped by persons of lesser intellect. For the benefit of such persons, a portion of what was said in such works is summarized here. Therefore one need not doubt any redundancy.
