It may be recalled that Jhulpi Krishnacharya Balacharya was installed on the
spiritual gadi of his guru as Satyavara Teertha, just before he breathed his
last en route to Mahishi. It was quite a job to protect his body and the enormous
wealth of the Matha from the follwers of Tippu Sultan. It was only with the intervention
of Dewan Poornaiah , who was then in Srirangapatna, that he could safely proceed
to Mahishi without any mishap or loss. These were the days of Tippu Sultan and
his marauding armies and followere and courtiers who were out to piunder the
rich . On the advice of Dewan Poornaiah, he had to hide all the wealth of the
Matha underground secretly unknown to others. He could also not undertake his
Sanchara like his predecessors but stayed in Santebennur for quite some time.
It was here that the idols of worship of the Uttaradi Matha were stolen with
all the jewellery on them . The saint broke down at this theft. Word was sent
to Poornaiah for police help to recover the grat idols which was the pride of
Uttardi Matha for ages. Poornaiah put the entire police force, as it were, on
the job , started merciless tratment of all suspects and put mortal fear in them.
In the meantime the Swamiji took a vow that he would neither eat nor sleep till
the idols were restored to the matha and prayed , and prayed all the time . Twenty
days elapsed and he started sinking and collapsing in helth and his sishyas wre
afraid. On the 21st day, however, a pandit of the Matha, Navratna Annayacharya
came accidentally across the idols without all the jewellery, hidden in grass
under a plantain leaf near an old dilaidated well, Obviously the thief , having
taken away all the jewellery, and finding no use for these idols ,and afraid
of his life had left these vigrahas there , Shri SAtyavara Teertha on hearing
of this find, though he could not even walk a few steps because of his weak health,
literally ran with all the Matha followeres to the spot , recoverd the Moola
Rama and Sita and other vigrahas, held them in his hands and wept with copious
tears of joy and happinessa. He brought them to his matha , with all pomp and
ceremony , and immediately sanctified them according to Sastras as they were
touched by hands other than those of the saints of Shri Uttaradi Matha , and
worshipped them to his heart's content with supreme happiness and then only broke
his vow of 21 days fast and sleepless nights with the naivedya of the Lord.
However, he never recovered from the after-effects of the arduous fast he had
undertaken. He crowned pandit Annayacharya who had discovered the vigrahas as
the pontiff of Shri Uttaradi Matha and named him Shri Satyadharma. Shri Satyavara
Teertha Swamiji was pontiff for 3 years , 2 months and 5 days wht a eventful
and crucil 3 years in the history of Shri Uttaradi Matha and breathed his last
at Sante-Bennur where he has been entombed.
